Martin Hagen is President of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and remains a consultant to Deloitte, having retired as a partner in 2005. He is also a deputy chairman of the Regulatory Decisions Committee of the Financial Services Authority (FSA) and a member of the Audit Committee of the London School of Economics. Having trained at Knox Franklin & Co (now PKF) in Sheffield, and qualified as a member of the Institute in 1973, he joined Spicer & Pegler (now merged with Deloitte) in 1974 in the London office before moving to Bristol where he became a partner in 1983. As senior partner of the office and partner in charge of the West of England audit practice he had profit responsibility for one of the region’s largest audit and advisory practices. Martin has worked at board level with many listed, large national and multinational companies in a wide variety of roles including audit, corporate finance, risk management, corporate governance and accounting and fraud investigations. Martin has been actively involved in Institute affairs for many years, initially with the activities of the West of England Society of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales of which he has been a committee member since 1998, and president in 2002/03. Since 2000 he has been a member of the ICAEW’s Council and was chairman of the ICAEW’s Professional Standards Board between 2004 and 2007.
